Intellectual property filings on the rise
The number of global intellectual property filings has risen for another year, in spite of economic uncertainty and ongoing market turmoil.
New research published last week from WIPO reveals that the number of trade mark applications filed globally in 2011 reached a record high of 4.2 million. This represents an increase of 13.3 per cent on 2010 figures.
The total number of global patent filings also increased in 2011 – by 7.7 per cent, the second year in a row where growth has exceeded seven per cent.
According to Francis Gurry, WIPO director-general, the increasing number of trade mark and patent applications is a testament to a desire to keep innovating – even in times of financial uncertainty.
“Sustained growth in IP filings indicates that companies continue to innovate despite weak economic conditions,” he said.
“This is good news, as it lays the foundation for the world economy to generate growth and prosperity in the future.”
WIPO also pointed to the countries that exhibited the highest growth when it comes to trade mark filings in 2011. China led the charge, with an increase of 31.2 per cent; followed by Brazil, which showed a rise of 21.6 per cent. India was also highlighted as a high-growth nation for trade mark filings, with the number of applications exceeding those from the Republic of Korea and Japan.
