China again leads the charge with trade mark growth
When it comes to growth in the overall number of trade mark applications filed, China continues to lead the way, according to the latest data published by the World Intellectual Property Organisation.
According to WIPO, Chinese trade mark applications contributed to 61.8 per cent of the global growth in trade mark applications, which saw a worldwide increase of 13.3 per cent in 2011.
With more than 4.2 million trade mark applications filed worldwide in 2011, Germany was the single largest contributor, filing 2.1 million equivalent applications worldwide. 1.4 million residents of China filed trade mark applications during the same period. One key difference, however, is that while most Chinese applications were filed domestically, the majority from the United States, France and Germany were filed abroad.
“The geography of innovation has shifted,” said Francis Gurry, WIPO director-general, of the considerable increases in Asian markets. However, he added that analysts must use caution when comparing trade mark and intellectual property growth in different nations, as circumstances are not always as straightforward as they may appear.
China also accounted for a significant number of patent filings – it is estimated that SIPO accounted for 72 per cent of the total increase of 293,900 global filings made between 2009 and 2011. In fact, in 2011, SIPO overtook the United States Patent and Trademark Office to become the largest patent office in the world.
